GPRDA Delivers Comprehensive Training on Gender Based Violence

Ghion Peace and Reconciliation and Development Association (GPRDA) successfully conducted two rounds of intensive three-day training workshops on Gender Based Violence (GBV) in Gondar from September 23-25 and September 29-01 October, 2025 at Jantekel Hotel. The training brought together 62 participants from Ambagiorgis, Maksegnit, Koladiba, and Gondar cities. The initiative aimed to strengthen participants’ understanding of gender, power dynamics, and violence, while equipping them with practical tools to prevent and respond to GBV at both community and institutional levels.

The workshop was designed using highly participatory methods, including group discussions, case studies, and role plays. These approaches encouraged participants to critically examine GBV through social, cultural, and structural lenses. The sessions also created a safe space for participants to share personal experiences, identify gaps within their communities, and collaboratively design localized action plans. Despite minor challenges related to cultural sensitivity and time limitations, the training achieved notable success in enhancing knowledge and shifting attitudes toward gender equality and GBV prevention.

Gender Based Violence remains one of the most widespread human rights violations globally, rooted in unequal power relations and reinforced by discriminatory norms and cultural practices. In Amhara region, GBV takes multiple forms, including domestic violence, early marriage, sexual harassment, and harmful traditional practices such as female genital mutilation. Recognizing the urgency of addressing these issues, GPRDA launched this training to build local capacity and strengthen community-based responses.

The training was structured to guide participants from conceptual understanding to practical application. The first day introduced foundational concepts such as gender, power relations, and their connection to GBV. Participants engaged in storytelling and reflection exercises to identify how gender inequality manifests in their own communities. As part of reframing misconceptions and deepening understanding, the training covered essential gender related concepts including sex, gender roles, patriarchy, matriarchy, gender discrimination, gender oppression, gender sensitization, gender equity and equality, gender mainstreaming, women’s empowerment, and feminism. These concepts laid the groundwork for exploring the socio-economic impacts of GBV, particularly on women and other vulnerable groups.

The concept of GBV itself received extensive attention throughout the sessions, enabling participants to better understand its root causes, risk factors, and the mechanisms needed for effective prevention and response. By the end of the workshop, participants expressed increased confidence in identifying GBV in their communities and in contributing to coordinated, multi sectoral efforts to address it.

GPRDA reaffirmed its commitment to promoting gender equality and strengthening community resilience. It was emphasized that building awareness and transforming attitudes at the local level is essential to reducing GBV and fostering a more just and equitable society.
